Yes, we have already done a review of DJI Osmo Action 4 for you!  And to be honest, it completely replaced the Sony X 3000. Finally, there is a camera that records both sound and video well. And then, after a while, GoPro announced an update to its proprietary camera. This is the 12th generation and there is no reason to make a separate article about it because it is almost the same as a year ago and a year ago, well, a year ago.

Let’s briefly tell you what’s new here!  Case. Now it seems to be made of recycled materials, that is, there are specks of them, but not all of them. That is, the central particle remained black. I think it would be cool if they changed not only the front and back. Well, a key and the whole body would be more stylish. It is now possible to connect Bluetooth headphones or a headset to listen or record audio! You can select microphones in our ation camera microphone attachment list

The tripod mounts that have appeared are probably the best upgrade, but in principle, this platform is easy to buy, and there are both standard and side ones. The GoPro is now a little cheaper, the price is official. Because it can be done, you can choose the best offer for one of these cameras.

We move on! Well, battery life in some modes declared almost 2 times more, we can say that there is something new, and we need to do a full review. I would, but it needs to be done when there is something to show. All this should be shown in the camera, how it shoots video and records sound, and all this has not changed at all. Therefore, I told you everything that has been updated and this could be the end of the description, so let’s compare them and figure out which one is better!

First, the case is more compact in the DJI Osmo Action 4 and, frankly, better in quality. These are purely my feelings. In GoPro Hero 12 Black, you constantly cling to something, well, something is wrong, something sticks out somewhere, does not fit, in DJI Osmo Action 4 everything is collected. Well, just cool!

Let’s move on. Mounting. Well, there are no options here, the DJI Osmo Action 4 is much better than the tripod mount in GoPro. This means that you can quickly hang your chest on your helmet or in different places on your car, for example. If you’re shooting something there, it’s much more convenient than these antennae, which are available from the 1st generation of GoPro, and you just need to unscrew, remove and screw it on just ten times longer than to do it with DJI Osmo magnets. Moreover, if they were somehow unreliable. No! Everything is super! You see, you’re riding a bicycle, you’ve adjusted, for example, the angle of view from your chest and to see what you’re shooting. With GoPro, you need to connect your smartphone, and it’s quite a long time. Or just take off the camera and look, so with GoPro, it’s not easy, but with DJI Osmo Action 4 it’s really easy.  I went out, saw that I stretched everything back without losing the angle of view, and continued to shoot.

Sound

Let’s talk about sound connection, and it seems that the GoPro Hero 12 Black should win because it is now possible to connect some sound recorders via Bluetooth. That’s cool! Everyone was waiting for this very much, so? It would be very logical to make it possible to connect loops directly to the camera. But as before, you need to connect the receiver, and so on.  It seems that everything is in one step, but you can do it even without connecting some additional things, as I said, there is a problem, I did not find such microphones. Yes, there is also audio duplication, that is, you can record 2 tracks at once on 3 built-in microphones. So you can record video using the DJI Osmo Action 4 and the sound will be recorded both on the built-in microphones and exported, and then you can combine these tracks or choose which one you need, for example, if the camera is outside, you can take sound from the headset. With the GoPro Hero 12 Black and other microphones, both wired and wireless, you can’t do this with the base. You need a media mod, so this is a disadvantage, and from this disadvantage, we move on to the next point with the sound, which is the quality of recording on the built-in microphones and this is why I choose DJI Osmo Action 4 as the main camera. The fact is that finally, after the Sony X3000, there is an action camera that records well, and it is even much better than Sony. Because for Sony to record sound well, you need wind protection.  The DJI Osmo Action 4 doesn’t have wind protection, but even on a bike on the go, everything was fine.

Image Quality

  • Resolution: GoPro Hero 12 can record in a maximum resolution of 5.3K at 60fps, whereas DJI is limited to 4K at 60fps.
  • Slow Motion: Both cameras offer 4K at 120fps. For ultra-slow motion at 240fps, GoPro provides a 2.7K resolution, while DJI shoots at 1080p.
  • Image Brightness & Dynamic Range: While the DJI footage often appears brighter due to its larger 1/1.3 inch sensor, GoPro Hero 12 maintains better dynamic range, particularly in its new HDR setting, which is absent in the Osmo Action 4.
  • Log Profiles: Both cameras have introduced log video formats to offer a more dynamic and tonal range in post-production. Both appear similar once color grades are applied, but GoPro seems to preserve more shadow details.

Let’s move on. Distortion and angle of view. Previously, DJI Osmo Action 4 was better in this parameter, and this year it is also better, because it has a higher viewing angle in ultra white, and less distortion Is there distortion? Well, of course, it exists, but you can compare it between 2 cameras. In GoPro, it looks very rounded. But I’ll also give you that Maxlens is available for GoPro. She already has 2 versions and basically, she now shoots wider than it would have been If it hadn’t been so sad last year when 1 in this module was filmed, even though it’s specially made to be wide anyway not as wide as on the DJI recording at night.

Recording at night

The fact is that GoPro records in maximum 4k resolution, but the sensor here is physically larger, and therefore recording at night is better better, because you just see the most if you aesthetically put these cameras, I don’t know who and why shoots with the camera at night, but if you need to do this still Hero 12 Black is ahead here

Accessories

Let’s move on to other things. The DJI Osmo Action 4, as always, has a COMBO Kit. And it comes with a case with 2 batteries, that is, you will have 3 batteries in the kit. This case can act as both a power bank and to charge the batteries very quickly because the most important thing for me is fast charging. DJI has it, and that means you get an 80 percent charge in 18 minutes. It’s just incredible, and it helps a lot. If, for example, you are shooting on a bike trip, the battery runs out and you can quickly connect and in just a few minutes continue to shoot until it is fully charged, it will take fifty minutes, and this is also really cool because the GoPro Hero 12 Black will take 110 minutes to fully charge and there is no fast charging. In this case, there are still places to store memory cards and micro CDs shorter for long shootings, like mine, so this is exactly what you need. But, GoPro also have some intresting battery accessories

Let’s move on. The DJI Osmo Action 4 and GoPro Hero 12 Black have front-facing displays. However, GoPro is not touch-sensitive; DJI’s , is touch-sensitive, and you can do whatever you want. That is, it is the same display as the back you can all the settings, and all the changes save some quick settings to do through this display it is very convenient, especially when the camera is already fixed and you only see the front display. Of course, you can quickly remove it, because there is a magnetic mount, but even this does not need to be done. And you won’t adjust anything from this display.

Let’s move on. DJI has a Quic setting button, GoPro does not have it, only turning on the camera and switching modes. What is it?!  In DJI Osmo Action 4 Pro, you can add your settings to the menu. For example, I need a specific mode there at hand. With this button, you will always have these modes at hand. One mechanical key turned on, turned off, started recording, finished, pressed the button a couple of times, and switched to another mode Super Fast.

Next, the launch speed of the cameras. DJI Osmo Action 4 starts up a second or even earlier than GoPro. And this is very important. We saw something interesting and clicked and she was filming, in a GoPro. This does not happen.

Video

I can see the GoPro Hero 12 Black in 5k, but in reality it’s just numbers. If you compare 4K shooting on DJI and 5K on GoPro, there is almost no difference in detail. GoPro has more sensors and you just have a better picture, so I wouldn’t say in detail that it wins, but 8*9 CEO about it is a really cool thing! Why? Because it is almost square, you can shoot a video in this format and then choose whether to make it vertical or horizontal. For example, I would always do it horizontal, but then, if you need to edit something for TikTok or Instagram, you have such an opportunity and it’s cool. And DJI can only write in 4k and square sensor. And that’s kind of all the pros of GoPro that can be mentioned. But no, because then I started testing overheating.

Testing was carried out in the following settings: 4k 50fps and DJI turned off due to overheating after 24 minutes, although it had 80 percent of the battery! The GoPro continued to shoot for another 20 minutes, for a total of 44 minutes, and shut down at 46 percent charge. That’s cool! however, here I can say such a small amendment that the GoPro is still a little more. If you take a camera to shoot such long shots in a warm room, when the cameras are on the surface, do not cool down in any way, then why do you need an action camera?! Such cameras overheat, that is, on a hot day, it is really a problem to shoot on a shoot. But for such shootings, if you have very long stand-ups, I’d rather use a smartphone, everything will be more or less fine with it.

Conclusions

We have to say that DJI Osmo Action 4 shoots really cool, even better in some modes. Is there no such problem as last time, when the lens had to be either twisted or unscrewed so that everything was sharp? Everything is fine, but at the same time the dynamic range. At the same time, the GoPro Hero 12 Black still has high picture quality, the colors are a little more pleasant. If you’ve shot with a GoPro Hero 12 Black before, chances are you need to choose to take it. I’ll tell you honestly, if it weren’t for such a slow GoPro charging speed and lousy sound, in any case, I would have chosen DJI even with all the advantages. However, now I can’t just do it, because the only downside for me is that it’s overheated. And I’ve never seen it in my life, because I shoot for 2-3 minutes at most. This is such a state. Sensors drove out, recorded something, threw it back, it cooled down, recorded again, and so on. In this mode, it never even heats up. And if you don’t shoot right in the heat, then it won’t have time to warm up, and when it’s cold, it lives downright awesome and it is impossible to turn it off in the cold, and GoPro had such problems.
That is, I can’t say that any camera here is much better. You don’t need perfect stabilization, unless you’re really shooting action to make it feel like there’s movement, so I choose DJI Osmo Action 4 for myself. But if you’ve already owned a GoPro Hero 12 Black and liked it, then go ahead and use it. It’s a cool camera. I can’t say it’s a direct failure, but really, you should wait for the GoPro Hero 13 Black generation in that I think they won’t be able to release another year in a row with a camera with hardware like past generations.
